About the Artist
Spetzler Designs is a one-person kinetic wood art studio based in Eugene, Oregon, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Gary makes hand-cranked wooden automata, runs workshops and classes, and had recently begun to create bespoke commission pieces.
Robot Enlightenment
More than 20 hand-cranked automata ā each one exploring a different emotional state or quality of a life lived fully. A small wooden figure ā hand-cranked, entirely wooden, full of feeling ā is working its way through the full emotional range of a human life.
Wood is the Right Material
It is warm. It carries the memory of where it grew. An object in wood is timeless. It ages and builds character over time. Just like the person who owns it.
